The Lancaster Sewer District was established in 1967 by a special act of the Massachusetts Legislature to provide cost effective wastewater conveyance and treatment for the members of the District.

The Massachusetts Legislature created the LSDC as a "Body Corporate," an independent municipal body charged with the planning, construction, and operation of sewers within a District initially established in the southern portion of the Town of Lancaster Massachusetts.

Although the LSDC often works cooperatively with the Town of Lancaster and utilizes it's services, it is a wholly separate entity and does not fall under the auspices of the Town's Government.

The LSDC is managed by a board of Commissioners, each elected by the voting members of the District to rotating three-year terms.
